Service Description
Pilates is ideal for pre and postnatal women as it can be used to reduce low back pain, maintain stability, promote postural awareness and strengthen the pelvic floor and abdominal wall. Who should attend Those who are in the first three trimesters of pregnancy and who have given birth and allowed 6 to 8 weeks after birth and have been given the go ahead to return to exercise. i.e. have no contraindications or signs that they should not exercise as it could be harmful. Please note that pregnancy and post-partum are not time to challenge your body but more a time of wellbeing maintenance/listening to your body to keep yourself fit and well at this amazing time. Benefits of pre- and post-natal Pilates “The more active and fit you are during pregnancy, the easier it will be for you to adapt to your changing shape and weight gain. There is evidence that active women are less likely to experience problems in later pregnancy and labour.” NHS (i) Strengthens deep tissue and muscle stabilisers Pilates is low impact, and which is perfect for all trimesters Control required to perform exercise means that over stretching of ligaments and joints is avoided Helps to encourage better pelvic floor engagement Promotes better breathing method. Pilates helps to accelerate recovery after birth and can help rectify diastasis recti (separation of the rectus abdominus), which is common in post-partum women. (1) Web Exercise in pregnancy - NHS 23/03.2025 Each class is 55minutes long and Pilates Mats, TheraBand’s and blankets are provided. (8 Places per class) The class is run by Fiona Swan, Level 3 Mat Based Pilates Instructor and Level 3 qualification on Pre and Post Natal exercise.
