Start your journey to a healthier you in 2025! By Fiona Swan

Feel great with simple Pilates based exercises. Find out why Pilates is good for you and why I like teaching it.

If you're looking for an activity that’s really going to make a difference to your everyday life, why not give Pilates a try? I teach Pilates classes in Exeter as well as online (have done for over 10 years) and here's my view on why Pilates is good for you.

To get us started though, you may ask, what is Pilates? Many think it’s a form of yoga, however, Pilates is actually a series of 34 exercises developed by Joseph Pilates, born in Germany in 1880. As a child, Joseph Pilates had various health issues. To overcome them he devised his own set of exercises, based upon his own life experiences, as a wartime fitness instructor, his time in the circus, and influences from the world of ballet. His method focuses on controlled flowing movements along with good posture and breathing. His resulting work, the 34 mat-based exercises, really do work the whole body, and now form the basis of modern-day Mat-based Pilates classes.

Why is Pilates good for you?

In my view, one of the best reasons for taking up Pilates is to maintain a healthy functioning body - to help you get the most out of life. Pilates is particularly effective as it works all the muscle groups in an even and balanced way. It also ticks many boxes in terms of 'the components of fitness', such as strength, flexibility, mobility, balance, and co-ordination.

The focussed breathing associated with Pilates, also aids relaxation.

By addressing these simple components of fitness, individuals can continue to enjoy the activities they love for longer, such as playing with grandchildren or gardening. Alternatively, you may have a sport that you would like to enhance, such as kayaking, paddle boarding, golf, or tennis - where balance, strength, and mobility all come into play.

As an instructor, this is why I teach Pilates. It's extremely rewarding to see my classes keeping fit and as a result having a better quality of life. Its as simple as that.

A couple of weeks ago I asked one of my classes, why do you do Pilates? and here is what some of them said,

“I have osteoporosis and it’s really helped with my core strength and balance.”

“Pilates slows down the aging process. Its a great add on to other activities, such as running and walking.”

“To improve balance and strength and it helps with my lower back”

"My shoulders and neck are more flexible and this helps me turn my head when driving."

“My physio recommended Pilates and your class hit the spot.”

This really brought it home to me, that Pilates is really helping in the most basic and fundamental way. So, if you are thinking about giving Pilates a go, please do. It's suitable for everyone and can be practiced at all levels.

If you would like to try a class the term dates for my sessions at Alphington Community Theatre Room, Powderham Castle or online can be seen on my website www.pilatesinexeter.co.uk. To reserve your place either book online or e-mail fiona@pilatesinexeter.co.uk

Hope to meet you in 2025.
